HOW COMMON IS GDM IN INDIA?
The incidence of GDM has increased to 20% in the last 10 years, which suggest that one in every 5 women is likely to be a GDM mother. There is a 25% risk for congenital malformation, if high glucose is detected in first trimester. The GDM prevalence in India is estimated to be 10 - 14.3%, which is above the projected range of developed countries. In a recent study conducted by DIPSI, the urban Indians have a 17.8% incidence of GDM, 13.8% in semi-urban and 9.9% in rural India. One should be able to see the big picture linked with projected GDM patients, as these data reflect lifestyle choices and preferences of Indian household. So if we can create behavioral changes among GDM mothers, we will be in a better position to influence their whole family, thereby reducing the overall diabetic burden of the country. Finally, it’s important to remember that, GDM acts as a warning sign for potential future NCD development. So be serious about the warning signs your body gives and take charge of your own well- being.
